Biography

Compositions, improvisations and installations by reedist, composer and computer musician Matt Bauder (b. 1976, Michigan) are informed by jazz, free jazz, avant-garde, as well as popular and rock music practices. Bauder’s music strives for conceptual clarity despite eclectic influences and often focuses on distilled elements from the above genres as well as influence from literary and visual arts. In the tradition of jazz and improvised music, he often performs his own works, in various settings from solo to large chamber ensembles. Bauder studied at the University of North Texas and the University of Michigan where he earned a bachelor of fine arts in Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation. He then situated himself in the thriving music scene in Chicago where he became an active composer and performer. After two formative years in Chicago he attended Wesleyan University and received a masters’ in composition. There he studied composition and computer music with Ron Kuivila and composition with Anthony Braxton and Alvin Lucier. He furthered his studies in computer music with a yearlong residency at the Hochschule für Gestaltung at the ZKM center for media arts in Karlsruhe, Germany. Now based in Brooklyn, NY, Bauder is the leader of Day in Pictures, a creative jazz quintet; Paper Gardens, a chamber quartet; White Blue Yellow and Clouds, which is experimental Doo-Wop and R&B, and he is part of the collaborative trio Memorize the Sky. Among many others he has performed with Anthony Braxton, Bill Dixon, Fred Anderson, Roscoe Mitchell, Jeff Parker, The SEM Ensemble, Ken Vandermark and Phil Minton. As a sideman plays and records with Rob Mazurek (Thrill Jockey), Harris Eisenstadt (Clean Feed/Songlines), Taylor Ho Bynum (Firehouse 12/Hathut), Jason Ajemian (Locust Music), Neil Michael Hagerty (Drag City), His Name is Alive (4AD/TimeStereo) and Bill Brovald (Tzadik). His recordings as a leader and co-leader on 482 Music, Clean Feed and Eye & Ear Records have received wide critical acclaim.
