Certainly, chance, or rather opportunity, in the form of Steve Swell and Rob Brown's presence in France at the time, precipitated this meeting of five. But that's not enough; in fact, it's not enough to bring these five strong personalities together to create music that makes sense, both in terms of meaning and direction. It took willpower and a real desire on the part of each of them to broaden their horizons.
This music is no miracle. As in biology, it's a matter of chance and necessity. And the fact that an expression originally used in biology by Jacques Monod, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine, can be transposed to jazz is proof, if proof were needed, that jazz is also a living organism, and therefore in constant evolution. This album is a perfect illustration.
